Recently, when Boom Supersonic tested its XB-1 demonstrator, and NASA tested its X-59 Quiet SuperSonic Technology aircraft (QueSST), it highlighted significant technological strides in aviation. The XB-1 achieved supersonic speeds in some of its tests, while the X-59 aims to reduce the sonic boom to a mere thump, potentially opening doors for overland supersonic travel. Beyond speed, the sector has seen other innovations. Electric air-taxi start-ups are attracting big investments. Sustainable aviation fuel promises greener travel. Digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) for predictive maintenance and optimised flight paths are bringing in much-needed efficiency. However, the industry also faces headwinds regarding scalability, regulatory hurdles, the actual environmental benefits of some solutions, and the high costs associated with these new technologies.
